IEEE survey: Microsoft is software industry's leading innovator

I was reading through IEEE's recent patent portfolio survey and was surprised to see that Microsoft was ranked No. 1 in terms of the overall quality, and more importantly, scientific value of its patent portfolio. The company that gave us Clippy is also sitting on a small mountain of innovation.

The question, of course, is how to turn raw innovation into saleable products. In this area Microsoft may be too dependent on last decade's products to truly focus on the next decade. Yes, Microsoft has churned out the Zune, Xbox, and other new products. But I suspect its dominance in operating systems and office productivity suites keeps it from truly pushing the envelope with new products, because everything has to fit within yesterday's conception of how computing should work.

In short, could Microsoft be its own worst enemy?

Here are the rankings:

IBM sees a big future in little markets

It's interesting to see the mammoths of software looking to emerging and SMB (small- to medium-size business) markets to fuel big growth in the future. The traditional enterprise market is saturated, forcing them to move on to forage for food. The question is, can these big companies succeed on leaves and grass?

IBM is the latest to make its move, as the Wall Street Journal reports today. IBM is targeting developing markets due to higher growth rates:

In a memo to IBM's top executives, Chairman Samuel J. Palmisano said IBM will establish a new organization, reporting to sales chief Douglas Elix, to target markets in Southeast Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Mr. Palmisano said many countries in these regions have economic and technology-spending growth "running well ahead of the global average--and we know how to capture it."...

Updated: Does Yahoo even know there's an iPhone? Yes!

Update, 10:09 a.m. PST: After reading my original column (see below), Yahoo representatives asked to discuss with me the current and future strategy Yahoo has embarked on. And while I was skeptical of where the company is going and I still think there is considerable work that needs to be done, I'm happy to report that after speaking with the Yahoo folks, it looks like the company has it together. (For starters, it has an iPhone-specific Web page.)

According to Yahoo, it's currently working on bringing that iPhone Web app to the Net, and as the company has pointed out, its integration with the iPhone on weather, stocks, and even mail has helped it parlay that experience into exciting new Yahoo products on the horizon. Obviously I can't get into some of the services that were discussed (and neither can Yahoo), but let me say that this company seems to have its head on straight and should be pretty well equipped to get in on the iPhone Web app game.

Now, I know some folks were a bit upset with the title of this piece (same as the current one, but without the "Yes!") because obviously Yahoo knows there's an iPhone, but the real intent was to highlight the issues that I have seen in Yahoo's mobile strategy and my belief that it has ignored the online side of the iPhone's functionality. But after speaking with Yahoo representatives who highlighted some of the finer points in the company's strategy and its intentions for the future, you can bet that I'll be looking forward to future launches of services.

Oh, and look for that Yahoo home page to get much more user-friendly, too (my biggest pet peeve).

Yahoo

Wake up, Yahoo.

(Credit: CNET Networks)

Original post starts here: If you've been following the latest news out of Cupertino and Mountain View, you probably know that Google has developed an app that will allow all iPhone users to surf over to the Google home page and enjoy a page specifically designed for the Apple product.

Not only does the new page consolidate all of Google's services, it makes for easy browsing and a far more enjoyable experience.

But for some odd reason, Google is the only major search engine offering full-fledged support for the iPhone. And while I can understand why Microsoft may be unwilling to support the iPhone's mobile Safari browser, what is Yahoo's excuse?

Simply put, the mobile search experience on Google is fantastic, but when it comes to Yahoo, it's pure garbage.

Vista won't be abandoned so here's how to fix it

Windows Vista

Why won't you abandon me, Microsoft?

(Credit: CNET)

Since Microsoft has abandoned my plan of abandoning Vista, I feel compelled to help the company out in any way I can. And while I still believe abandoning Vista is the only true option of fixing Windows, I can appreciate the fact that Microsoft has dumped a huge sum of cash into the OS and it's loath to lose out.

Of course, with reports suggesting Vista will become a target for hackers in 2008 and now, even Microsoft executives have no idea what "Vista Capable" really means, I can't help but think this operating system is tanking faster than Microsoft Bob.

But I digress. Although Windows XP running Service Pack 3 is almost twice as fast as Windows Vista running SP1 and major hardware manufacturers are still selling XP machines out of desire for once, Microsoft wants to hold on to Vista regardless of where it takes the company. Will it force the company into a tailspin? I think it already has. Will it get worse? Possibly. But if Microsoft heeds my warnings and follows some of the tips I will outline below, Windows Vista may not be the utter failure I think it will be if nothing changes.

In on-air gaffe, Fox Business Network confuses Apple with Abu Dhabi

Fox might mean business, but it also means unintentional comedy.

(Credit: Fox Business Network)

The Writers Guild of America can keep up its strike--there's plenty of unscripted comedy on the fledgling Fox Business Network.

On its morning show, Money for Breakfast (full disclosure: I have been a guest on Money for Breakfast), anchor Alexis Glick accidentally reported that Apple had taken an 8 percent stake in chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices.

"There's some news coming across the tape right now," Glick said on the live program. "We're seeing from Wall Street Journal that Apple is buying an 8 percent stake in AMD."

Money for Breakfast host Alexis Glick

(Credit: Fox Business Network)

In fact, it was the government of the United Arab Emirates state of Abu Dhabi, not Apple, that had purchased the stake in AMD. Yes, yes, I know Steve Jobs' Cupertino empire really could be mistaken for a cash-flooded sovereignty sometimes. But let's be serious. Apple? Abu Dhabi?

When the mistake became clear, Glick's co-host, Peter Barnes, said, "Oh, the Arabs. OK." To make matters worse, the program even referred to the country incorrectly, as "Abu Dubai," not "Abu Dhabi."

Even funnier, contributing analyst Charles Payne--the founder and CEO of Wall Street Strategies--had gone right along with the gaffe. "That's real smart by Apple because AMD is in trouble right now," he had said to Glick. "AMD has always had two problems: either it had a great product that was either sometimes superior to Intel but not the distribution, or it would have a terrible product that obviously they couldn't compete."

Never mind the fact that Apple has been stocking its computers with, um, Intel chips, and has been doing so for over two years. If Jobs & Co. had bought a stock in AMD, that'd be beyond huge news.

It doesn't look like any video of the snafu has surfaced (yet), but check out the transcript, courtesy of the Silicon Alley Insider. It literally reads like something out of Anchorman or a Saturday Night Live skit:

Legally, are Facebook's social ads kosher?

Most of Facebook's reported 50 million users might be mostly ordinary people, but the site's latest legal issue involves celebrity law.

Earlier this month, shortly after the social networking site announced its Social Ads initiative, University of Minnesota law professor William McGeveran argued in a blog post that the new program might violate a number of privacy laws.

Social Ads, which have already begun to appear on the site, are designed to boost Facebook's lukewarm revenues by targeting ads directly toward the members in question. They allow Facebook members to sign up as "fans" of an advertiser and then have their names and profile photos displayed alongside the marketer's ads on their friends' Facebook pages. Problem is, that potentially violates a New York privacy law that protects peoples' names and likenesses from being used without written permission, according to McGeveran.

"It's not just a New York law. Most states have statutes that protect this. Sometimes it's called a right of publicity, sometimes it's called commercial appropriation, sometimes it's a right to privacy," said Brian Murphy, a partner at Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz, a New York-based media and entertainment law firm. "It's essentially that area of law that protects all of us, but in particular celebrities, from having their likenesses used without their permission."

The real problem facing Facebook, however, isn't that Social Ads are illegal. Social media, including Facebook, is an uncharted territory for the American legal system, and old laws are being applied to a new concept. The New York privacy law that McGeveran cited, indeed, has its roots "more than a hundred years years ago by some bigwigs back in the late 1890s who were tired of having their private lives splashed across the equivalent of Page Six," said Murphy.

The top global technology brand for 2007 is (drum roll, please) ... um, I'm not sure. One market research firm says Google, the other says Microsoft. This is embarrassing.

Handvertising: Marketing (re)discovers the human body

Borders between the human body and technology are slowly disappearing; advertising, network, commerce and consumer are converging as well.

The undead take Manhattan at Zombiecon '07

What is a zombie, anyway?

Is it a childhood nightmare, a modernized niche of folklore, a box-office-tested horror film staple, an ironic riff on American consumerism, or simply an undead corpse hungry for fresh human brains?

Maybe it's all of the above. On Saturday at noon, somewhere around 200 zombies assembled at a bar in midtown Manhattan and proceeded to terrorize the city well into the night. This was Zombiecon 2007, the third annual edition of the pre-Halloween flash mob, and these reanimated corpses took the day very seriously. Among the crowd were undead clowns, airline pilots, ballerinas, doctors, chefs, Roman generals, prom couples, and tennis players. There were also zombified versions of Santa Claus, Pirates of the Caribbean protagonist Captain Jack Sparrow, singer Amy Winehouse, and author Hunter S. Thompson.

(Others, like yours truly, just spruced up jeans and a T-shirt with theatrical blood and white face paint.)

Also spotted: Lindsay Campbell, host of video blog Wallstrip, in a full-on goth-zombie ensemble as she interviewed fellow members of the undead for the cameras.
